MACAW Success at fantastic Silverstone Circuit!

The MACAW Motorsport team arrived at Silverstone International Circuit not knowing what the weekend would bring for the team. In the absence of Paul Kaynes the team fielded 3 cars including the most recent addition to the team – Ian Williamson, who was hoping to see the end of his engine woes with a newly built engine. He was joined on the track by Rocket Rob who had an excellent outing at Cadwell just 3 weeks ago and also Chris Woods, who had pulled himself away from house building long enough to fit in a weekend of racing…

Qualifying Report:

The forecast the night before had been for heavy rain until midday, however as usual the weather reports had not been accurate and the team woke up to damp but drying conditions, nothing like the heavy rain that had been forecast. As the boys took to the track the conditions had changed to light rain and it made for a tricky qualifying session, with the track starting wet and drying through the session...

MACAW Motorsport welcome Ian Williamson to the team…

Big news here at MACAW Motorsport as we welcome experienced driver and podium finisher from Brands Hatch – Ian Williamson to the MACAW Motorsport team as our 4th driver…

Ian Williamson comes from a karting background and can still be found often competing in endurance karting events like the Le-Mans 24hrs Kart Race amongst other big events. Ian entered circuit racing in 2016 with his Citroen Saxo VTR in the Stock Hatch Championship, finishing a fantastic 5th place overall in his first season of racing. He went on to compete in Class C of the Hot Hatch Championship in 2017 but could only manage to attend 3 of the rounds. The start of the 2018 Season saw Ian work closely with the MACAW team and with the help of Mark Freeman added various upgrades to the car and managed to resolve handling issues which had plagued the car during the 2017 season. With the new found balance in the car and fresh determination he did fantastically well at the opening round of the 2018 season at Brands Hatch, finishing both races in strong 3rd place finishes.

Unfortunately after Brands Hatch Ian swapped engines in an attempt to further improve the car, ...

MACAW on pace at Cadwell Thriller…

At Cadwell Park the MACAW Motorsport Team had the Rocket – Rob Fagg back out on track after repairing his damaged car from Croft, as well as podium finisher at the last round from Pembrey – Paul Kaynes, who was hoping to build on his recent form. Both drivers opted to do a full day of testing on the Friday and both showed great pace during the day. Unfortunately the weather Friday evening was not great, with storms pushing in and gazebos turning into kites, but thats another story all together.

Qualifying Report:

The conditions for qualifying had changed from the previous days hot and humid conditions to a green and slightly damp track, however this did not matter to the MACAW boys. Both Rob and Paul were fast from the off with Rocket Rob securing an early pole position lap time which stood for most of the session before he went even quicker towards the end, finishing Qualifying in Pole Position, a good 4 tenths of a second ahead of championship leader Michael Winkworth. Paul Kaynes also had a fantastic qualifying session but could not match the pace of Fagg or Winkworth at the front of the field...

MACAW get first silverware of season!..

MACAW Motorsport had Paul Kaynes and Chris Woods out for the rounds at Pembrey, with the noticeable absentee being Rocket Rob who was still in the process of repairing damage to his car from Croft.

Qualifying Report:

After a hot day of testing on the Friday, Saturday was to bring another day of hot weather for qualifying and both races. In the heat it was Paul Kaynes who managed to top the two MACAW drivers gaining a brilliant 3rd place start on the grid for Race 1. Chris Woods was a mere 4 tenths behind and secured a 4th place start on the grid. The question was… After all of the issues the team had so far this year, would either driver be able to get some well deserved silverware for the MACAW Motorsport team…?

Race 1

Race 1 saw both Paul and Chris get off to storming starts, holding their positions against the field and both trying hard to try and get Mac who was running in front of PK in 2nd. However after the initial laps the field began to stretch out. Chris attempted to close in on Paul, but as they were too evenly matched on pace he could not close the gap...

Rocket Rob suffers but shows great pace…

MACAW Motorsport only had 1 car out for the races at Croft – the Rocket Rob Fagg, but joined forces with Dave Measday and Ian Williamson, working together as a team with the help of Mark Freeman Race Car Prep to get all cars ready for the event.

Qualifying Report:

After a fully wet test day on the Friday, conditions for Qualifying had completely changed, with a dry but green track. Rob was quickly on the pace in qualifying having dominated the Class C times in the previous wet test day. The Rocket managed to put in 2 fantastic laps, both in the 1:41’s range, something which no other Class C driver would manage during the entire race event. Taking Race 1 Pole Position with a 1:41.78 – 6 tenths of a second clear of Adam Read in 2nd. This was a new Qualifying Lap Record for Class C and the fastest ever Class C lap around Croft.

Race 1

After such a fantastic performance in Qualifying, Rocket Rob was about to experience more bad luck in the proceeding races. At the start of race 1 Rob lost the lead to the fast starting Adam Read but after the first few corners got back into the lead with a late breaking move into Tower...

MACAW show promising start to season…

MACAW Motorsport had all 3 cars out for last weekends start to the season at the wonderfully sunny Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent. All of the drivers were keen to get the season underway after the false start at Donington last month due to the weather.

Qualifying Report:

With a capacity grid of 34 cars out on track at the same time, qualifying was always going to be difficult to get a clear lap, however early on in the session Rob Fagg put in an early lap of 57.99 which temporally placed him in pole position, however a late surge in the session saw him pipped to pole by just 0.1 of a second by newcomer Michael Winkworth, pushing Rob down to 2nd. Paul Kaynes had a busy session but eventually found some space to put in a solid 58.93 placing him 5th place on the grid. However circuit racing newcomer Chris Woods was not far behind putting in an impressive lap of 59.01 getting him up to 8th place on the grid.

Race 1

After a great qualifying session by all of the MACAW drivers and hopes of some silverware, race 1 was sure to be a busy with all to play for. Unfortunately this was not the case for Rob who started 2nd on the grid...

Donington GP Race Meeting Cancelled…

MACAW Motorsport drivers Paul Kaynes and Rob Fagg headed up to the fantastic Donington Park circuit for what was due to be a full day of testing, followed by the first race weekend of the season on the GP Layout.

However, the typically unpredictable UK weather hit back with the ‘Beast from the East 2’…

The Friday test day was mostly wet running, with 3 out of 4 sessions declared wet, which provided a good opportunity to practice the teams wet weather setup and car control skills on what was a very slippery surface. Both Rob and Paul put in some good times in both wet and dry conditions. Unfortunately the dry running was cut dramatically short by several red flags but in the end the Rocket Rob managed to get close to the lap record pace for Class C. The team were feeling confident after the days testing and with new tyres and hopefully some clear space on track during qualifying, we were fairly sure that we would have a good chance of getting both cars in the top 3 on the grid for Race 1…

Catch up with some on-board footage from Rob Fagg below:

Unfortunately the next day it was all to change, leaving the team devastated…

The weather forecasters...

MACAW Motorsports Testing…

MACAW Motorsport drivers Paul Kaynes and Rob Fagg headed down to what ended up being a fairly wet and slippery test day at Brands Hatch. This was the first opportunity for Paul & Rob to blow off the winter cobwebs and fully test the various winter upgrades both drivers had made.

Rob Fagg Testing Paul Kaynes Testing

The day started out very wet and led to come difficult driving conditions for both drivers, providing a great opportunity to test the handling of both cars in their wet setups. This provided some positive steps forwards in the development of both cars and enabled Chief Mechanic Mark Freeman of Mark Freeman Race Car Prep to adjust the cars and identify areas for improvement.

After the lunch break the circuit dried up for about an hour before further rain and hail changed the conditions again. But all told this was a very productive day for the team and next up will be Donington GP…
